The 16th annual Beachside Dash, held by St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF) at Peter Depena Reserve, Dolls Point on Sunday 10 September raised $100,000 for medical research and was enjoyed by hundreds of runners, spectators, sponsors and stallholders.
SSMRF CEO Pam Brown said “we are delighted that we reached our target of $100,000 which shows that the community recognises the importance of medical research at our local St George and Sutherland Hospitals. The success of the event was made possible by the generosity of our major sponsors: Club Central, St George Leagues Club, Sydney Airport, Ramsgate RSL, St George Private Hospital and Caringbah Rotary.
On top of the professionally timed races of 2km, 5km and 10km, the event had a coffee van supplied by Austbrokers SPT, a BBQ provided by Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach, and fun activities at the Fernwood Rockdale and Ramsgate RSL stands.
The crowd heard from Dash ambassadors, champion triathlete Craig Alexander and former St George Dragons player Jason Nightingale, as well as NSW Premier Chris Minns, former Prime Minister and Federal Member for Cook Scott Morrison, Sutherland Shire Council Mayor Carmelo Pesce, Georges River Council Deputy Mayor Kathryn Landsberry, and Margaret Starks, Vice President of Club Central.
UNSW Microbiome Research Centre Director Professor El Omar was interviewed by SSMRF ambassador 2GB Drive presenter Chris O’Keefe about the importance of medical research, particularly around the gut microbiome.
The School Cup Challenge trophy was won by St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School at Kogarah.
